I've got a '57 plate Rav4 XT4 2.2 D4D, not a problem towing an Elddis Odyssey and superb solo not your usual 4x4 soft roader body roll, fuel economy not bad either.
One thing you might think about is lack of spare wheel, we were going to have an XTR until we realised it doesn't have a spare just an aerosol can of sealer and a pump. There was no way we were going to rely on that towing a van so went for the XT4 instead. Believe all specs come without a spare fitted in 08 but you can have one as an option- new rear door with one on the back as normal.
