Real World MPG

Hello Emmerson,

I agree that the initial depreciation on a new car is horendus, and far outweighs alternative MPG's, But not every one buys their cars brand new, and some people only have to cover personal running costs, so mpg does have a cost implication.

Equally some people also have conscience about the world finite oil reserves and actively try to be as frugal as possible.

I drive a 2.0 Mondeo TDci (old model, 2006) and get a solo average about 42mpg combined (mix of city and rural driving). This is not the 48mpg claimed by Ford and is very disappointing compared with the VW groups 1.9TDI engine. My previous 2002 Mondeo had the older 2.0 TDdi engine and it manged 2 or 3 mpg better than the newer TDci. Many say the TDci is much quieter and more refined, I have never noticed the difference, and despite the two cars being the same weight and the two engines being 115bhp the older TDdi also offered better acceleration (around a second faster to 60mph).
