Why do people take all this unnecessary junk away with them on holidays? Surely a holiday is meant to relax and enjoy one's self and not to be lumbered with what is happening throughout the world which they probably have no controll over anyway. Go away man - chill out and relax and lett the world pass you by for a couple of weeks. The only piece of modern technology I take for emergency use only is a mobile phone.

As before, my Laptop is my office.

As self employed I get no paid hols so even with the best plans I have to keep in touch with work and customers at times when away.

We have no radio or TV, but apart from work related things internet access lets me book ferries etc and caravan sites and check out places we want to see around an area.

It's also quite useful when in Europe for translation, when my dad was alive I was also nice to be able to email him and send photo's of what we were up to or send a photo of the camp site.

Horses for courses

Some people want all that equipment some don't

CLs vs commercial sites

Countryside vs seaside

Forests vs lakes

UK vs abroad

Caravanning vs being herded

TV vs silence

Where do I stop?

Everyone has different needs/tastes.

Thank god they do otherwise we will all be seeing each other at the same campsite in the same outfit at the same time of the year all sat in the same place on our pitch eating the same food at the same time.

Viva la difference!

why is a mobile phone ok? if you really want to get away from it

all, thats the first thing you should leave at home...
....I don't have a mobile but my missus does, for emergencies and to ring her 90 year old mother at night to make sure she's o.k.

Lord B.

My response was to Brian, and his post on unnecessery junk?

I personel take as much as i can, but just womdered why the

mobile phone was ok, and the laptop/tv/ ect was not?

TVs have been around a lot longer than mobiles in caravanning

nearly all sites have phones, so why have a dig at what people

take away on site with them? but then add you take a mobile

phone?

Do you see what i am saying?

Take what you want, why critise what others take?

Giovanni I am not criticisng what other people take with them when going away - the point I was making is that I do not understand the need for all this equipment as, in my opinion, a caravan holiday is to relax and not to form an extension to a business office. Also if there were any problems at work these could be sorted out over the phone. If my posting has upset you sir I do apologise.

I cannot for the life of me understand why my wife wants to take the slow cooker as I tell her that the cooking will be done in either a cafe or restaurant and the only meals we have in the van is breakfast and supper. But there everybady to their own.

Once again sorry if I have upset you in any way with my comment.

I understand the point you were making gio but just stated why the missus takes one. Personally I don't give a dogsdump what people take with them as long as they enjoy themselves and most importantly, don't annoy others ;O)

For me 15 years ago I worked for a company and the caravan as now was very minimalist in what we carried.

I got paid for my Holiday time and some one else covered whilst I was away so there was no phone but we still had to call disabled family nearly every day from France or wherever so we were always waiting at campsite call box's or getting phone cards.

As I carry the can for most of the work and me and my crew getting paid I have to be contactable at least part of the day.

Mobile and Latop have to travel with me, I have clients working in Spain and Oz this week and the phone will be sure to ring again

Email and text is far better than constant time wasting business phone calls though.

I carry all my plans on small memory cards along with photo's, so I can sort a problem with no words spoken.

If I was an emlpoyee no doubt the phone would be hidden away unless needed for emergency.

Incidentaly Giovanni I cannot see a posting on this topic from Brian (I may be wrong) - I think the reference to the use of mobile phones was as a result of my previous posting. Sorry mate if I have caused any upset.

Cris not knowing your line of business but surely there is someone at work who can deputise for you. Wearing a pesimist cap for a moment how would the firm cope if something serious was to happen to you and you were laid up in hospital (God forbid mind that it should happen)? No person is indespensable.

You make a fair point, colin, and yes i have a mobile toobut

as you stated i too am out to relax. Doesn't mean that i should

refrain from keeping up with the news on tv or missing something

speical.

Now if i was to go caravanning and sit indoors all day watching

tv, then i would say whats the piont in going away.

also no need for appoliges we are only expressing our opinions.

Giovanni if there was something special to watch on TV I would either preset the recorder or ask a relative/friend to record it for me for when I got home. As far as the news is concerned it is all doom and gloom so I think I would be better off without it. Mind there is always the news on the car radio when driving if you wish to keep up to date. However as you say it is only an individual's opinion and it is up to the individual to do and act as they think fit.

Our work is planned some week ahead and my brother inlaw can handle most things but he has another business. All my guys are self employed and two have small farms.

When I crashed last year they got the work together and in place as usual. But it started to dry up as I don't advertise and work only by word of mouth reccomendations we had two houses and sold are old home.

I love my work and where it takes me, and no one else does it. So a few calls when were having a break is not a problem with new technology. By the summer most of the work is done so I just have to handle the odd panic call.
