We have a large twin axle caravan and would be interested if anyone could recommend a site near Lake Garda, with large pitches for twin axle. Most of the sites seem to have smaller pitch sizes.

Hi Chris

We went to Italy for the first time this year. We have an Avondale Landranger (7.36 metre twin-ax). We chose Lake Como rather than Lake Garda. We stayed at Camping La Riva, Sondrico at the northern end of the Lake. We found this in the Alan Rogers "Italy" guide. The site is, also, in the CClub Travel booklet. I would highly recommend that guide which we used a lot in deciding on our choice of sites. We, also, used the Caravan Club "Caravan Europe" guide - both guides are very helpful in choosing Italian sites. I got both at a good discount from Amazon UK.

After we had chosen we then asked, and got lots, of personal opinions on specific caravan sites on this and other caravan websites.

La Riva was right on the edge of the river where it flowed into Lake Como and surrounded by very grand mountain scenery. It had a small pool and bar/restaurant but that's about all. They had a number of large pitches fronting onto the river with only a wire netting fence, lovely views. Most of bigger pitches are at the newer end of the site which is, also, less crowded.

We booked direct with the site by email but we did have to send a deposit either by bank draft or cash in euros. We chose the cash by registered post as that was much cheaper. This was cheaper that booking direct with the Caravan Club.

The site is family owned and the family were very helpful. The owner's wife and some of the staff speak excellent English. The owner towed our van to another pitch when we were delayed from leaving by a car breakdown

We enjoyed La Riva with frequent trips in our 3 metre infLatable along the adjacent river. We did go onto Lake Como but the wash from the big Launches made it a bit scary. The weather was generally hot and sunny although there were a few thunder storms with strong winds on some of the venings. When we were taking down our awning a sudden squall blew it up onto the roof of caravan. It seems such squalls are relatively common in this mountainous region, that includes Lake Garda too I was advised.

After staying at La Riva for about 2 weeks we travelled on to Camping Cavallino near Venice and stayed there. In the case of this campsite we did NOT book in advance just phoned ahead the day before we travelled that site too had lots of large pitches and quite a lot of room.

We had planned to travel further but delays with a car breakdown and caravan tyre problems meant that we only visited these 2 sites in Italy.

We loved Italy and hope to return next summer. That is in spite of the mishaps we suffered - the car gearbox failed on the way home!!!!

Hope this is helpful... If we can help any more JUST ASK

We have stopped at Dezensano on Garda at Site San Francesco. It has large sites which are not hedged close to the lake. Suggest you go onto the ACSI website and you will find it on there.
