I have Norton on my PC for some time however since resuscribing last year the PC has run very slow and I recall seeing postings that were saying others have had the same problem as Norton seems to be in conflict with other security systems and several posters gave details of a very good alternative that works and was a free download.I have searched back but cant find the info.help please.

Since I've had broadband, about 5 years,I've used AVG Free and ZoneAlarm with no problems, both excellent.

I had a new computer at Christmas so decided to use Norton AV and firewall which is supplied free by BT Broadband.

From day 1 my computer kept crashing and I tried to delete Norton but it wouldn't let me so I did a system restore which finally got rid of it. I then downloaded AVG and ZoneAlarm and no more problems. My computer came with a Vista Upgrade which I did once I received the disc. AVG still downloads updates but I now have to restart for them to take affect. ZoneAlarm, last time I looked, will still not work with Vista.

Putting Vista on, although it was a free upgrade, proved very costly.

I have an Epson printer that no longer has a task monitor and prints so slowly that it stops half way through. I also have programmes that are of no use because they don't work even after running the Vista Update Advisor which told me there was only one programme that wasn't compatible.

On my new computer I have a dual graphics card but Vista can't recognise two so only updated the drivers for one of them so instead of having two 256mb cards I now only have one. Vista? if you have no need to don't go near it, at least for 12 months when hopefully things might have settled down.

No I didn't Plotter. The problem with mine is theres no new Vista driver from Epson for it yet, thats if there ever will be.

What I did find out recently though is that Epson, might be others too, are set to only print so many pages then it stops working. There is a programme, although I've not looked for it yet because it doesn't affect me, that will reset the counter to zero and allow your printer to continue working.

Had a few problems with Onecare, myself. It doesn't pick everything up (but there again, what does?) and sometimes it has difficulties updating it's virus definitions. Must say in it's defense, the standard of backup has been good. Any questions asked, have been answered.

I went to that web site Plotter and I must admit you've impressed me with your knowledge of Russian ;O)

What you posted seems a similar thing to what the Computer Tech who sorted my Vista told me.

AVG will remain free as far as I know - they do steer you to the chargeable version on their site (fair enough) and you might have to look carefully to find the right link but the free download is still there.

See this story for the source of the rumours that it would cease to be free:

There are very frequent updates, I know of no-one who has problems with it.

Norton is rightly or wrongly blamed for lots of software conflicts - but more importantly, you don't need to pay for a good anti-virus.

I had Norton on my old PC but all processing seemed to get slower and slower. On investigation I found that Norton updates don't give the latest version, they just add onto what you've got - so if you have Norton for two or three years it's just so much slower than buying a new version! Norton also used to make the PC crash from time to time but it was running Windows 98.

ZoneAlarm came free for 15 months with my broadband connection and works without undue intrusion on Windows XP. It updates automatically. I use both XP and ZoneAlarm firewalls, without any problem.

I also use free versions of AVG and SpyBot, which run fine with ZoneAlarm. AVG updates automatically every day but I have to remember to update SpyBot weekly.

I bought a licence (

AVAST is another free Antivirus programme for those who need such things .

I'm told [ I don't need it - have CLAM XAV if I'm in trouble ] it's easy to use - updates regularly and so far in 3 years has kept my husband's Laptop safe.

When he got his new PC Desktop Norton AV was on it . I screamed and said " get it off " or words to that effect. But he didn't and the machine got slower and slower. Eventually he used the Symantec removal tool and got most of it out. Now using AVAST on that machine and he's happy once more.
