got an x trail 08 2.0lt 173 bhp,it has a spare wheel which is on a low rated tyre on a 16 inch steel rim rather than the 17 ins alloy fitted as standard.it catagorically states in the manual you must not use when towing.and is limited to 50mph,it also has a limited load rating for use.have been told if i was caught towing,or exceeding the speed limit with this wheel i would be prosecuted.priced a spare alloy at nissan dealer and the coast was a staggering

We have been looking at new cars recently and a favourite was the Meriva until I found out it did not have a spare wheel at all and all that was supplied was a bottle of gunk to inflate your tyre. This may be a bit difficult if you have a side wall blow out. We have crossed numerous vehicles off our list due to the fact that there is either no spare wheel or the spare wheel is a space saver.

What would happen if you have a side wall blow out at 11pm and no garages are open to replace the tyre and you did not even have a space saver? Actually the same would apply if you did have a space saver but you needed to continue with your journey i.e. travelling from Scotland to South West/East England overnight and you were towing.

totally agree,these cars are targetted towards the towing fraternity yet they under equip it for one of its main purposes______total crap

As mr watson says it is a full size wheel, fitted with a sub standard tyre.

Today i have had another look at it, the spare is as follows.

Tyre details=215/65 R16 98M Bridgestone pressure 44psi

Road tyres are=215/60 R17 96H fitted with Dunlop ST20

Now the first xtrail i had also had a steel spare, but with a tyre to match the road wheels.

I do know the 17" wheels from the later xtrail versions will fit.

But am i right in saying, that this spare with the new xtrail, can be fitted with a 215/65 R16 98H SP20 as fitted to the 2004 xtrail i had?

Only i do have a part worn spare tyre, 5mm over 75%, 2mm on the sides.

Update.

After a frustrating couple of weeks trying to get some straight answers out of Nissan. I took the spare to the local tyre fitter, who i have used for years and have confidence in.

The end result is, i have removed the TEMPARARY tyre and replaced it with a Dunlop sp20, 215/65 98H.

This gives a overall diameter of 4mm less (same as original)

When I looked into a new tow car to replace Freelander TD4, I was shocked to find that the new Freelander basic model had no spare just the 'Landrover repair system' (can of gunk) and I think the same applied to the new CRV.

So I bought a Kia Sportage, saved

I changed to the CR-V 15 months ago and deliberately bought the newest (spare on the rear door) model I could find rather than the new shape (emergency 50mph thingy under boot floor) to have peace of mind when away with the van; I too need to order tyres ( word is the best on the CR-V are Goodrich Macadams).

For the same reason I always use Tyron bands on the caravan.
