"2.5bn 'Eco Stealth Tax' On Cars
New green road tax bands 'will have virtually no impact on environment'
New green tax could have little impactA £2.5billion green tax on cars will barely cut emissions at all, it has been claimed.
Chancellor Alistair Darling announced in the latest Budget that six more tax bands will be introduced that will target cars that produce the most carbon dioxide.
It has been estimated that annual income from duty will rise from £1.9billion to £4.4billion by 2010 - a rise of £2.5billion - as a result.
However the Tories claim they have uncovered figures from Parliamentary questions that show that emissions from motoring are expected to drop by less than 1%.
From April 2010 drivers buying cars that emit the highest levels of carbon dioxide, such as sports cars, will be hit with a 'showroom tax' of up to £950.
Conservative Treasury spokesman Justine Greening, who uncovered the figures, said: 'This is a massive tax hike which will have virtually no impact on the environment.
'Despite their claims, the Government don't expect this move to change behaviour at all - it is just another eco stealth tax of the worst kind.'
Edmund King, of the AA, said: 'This just benefits the Treasury coffers, not the environment.'"
