Got my latest issue of the magazine at the weekend on subscription. Am I the only one that didn't get the towcar supplement in the packet?

Landroverman,

Please send me an email and we'll send out the Towcar Awards 2008 supplement to you. Apologies that it wasn't in the pack.

The Towcar Awards is run by Practical Caravan, The Camping and Caravanning Club and What Car? and with Swift providing the caravans used for testing. The awards are now in their second year, and the awards supplement is being distributed with August issue of Practical Caravan, New Reg issue of What Car? and the August issue of the club mag.

Why are there two competitions?

Towcar of the Year has been running for many decades - Towcar Awards is in it's second year.

I suppose competition competition is good - will consumers benefit?

If the two competitions chose different winners, will there be a run off to find the "Best Towcar"?

Dear All,

There are no experts judging both competitions. The list of judges for the Towcar Awards is in the front of the supplement and includes the What Car? road-test team, former Practical Caravan editor David Motton, who now compiles our towcar tests and various members of the Camping and Caravanning Club.

We believe that the Towcar Awards represents Britain's most rigourous towcar test programme and this year includes 53 different models including new Citroen C5, Ford Kuga, Honda Accord Tourer and the new diesel Subaru Legacy.

For those seeking greener or smaller tugs, the Skoda Fabia, Peugeot 207 SW, Suzuki SX4 and VW Golf are there, while for those at the other end of the spectrum, Land Rover Discovery, Audi Q7 and Toyota Land Cruiser V8 also make an appearance.

We hope you enjoy the supplement and we welcome any feedback.

Roger L,

The Practical Caravan supplement goes first, and is on sale this week. It's also distributed with the New Reg issue of What Car? which publishes in early August. The Camping and Caravanning Club supplement goes out with its August issue, which appears next month.

The combined readership is estimated to be around 400,000.

Ken,

The cars tested are all ones which are new or have been substantially modified in the last year. The exceptions are the winners from last year's awards which were brought back to defend their crowns.

The Sorento was tested for the 2007 event, but has not been modified for 2008.

Hope this clears things up

This is the real weakness of these sort of awards - only new models are tested - this is ridiculous given that buyers will choose from all models in production, not just those newly announced.

Buyers particularly want to know how older winners still in production compare to new models.

Roger L,

You're completely correct of course, but the logistics involved in getting 53 of 2008's new towcars to one place to test are enormous. There simply isn't a way to include the several hundred other models which are already on the market, and taking the point to it's logical conclusion, the thousands of used models on the market.

That said, the ratings of last year's cars are available on the website at www.practicalcaravan.co.uk/towcar/ and the testing was very similar for last year and this year, so results are broadly comparable.

Hope this helps

What Car? don't have any problem making their annual awards out of all the cars on sale in each category.

The problem with new production only is that some years are better than others - some years two or three excellent models will be launched but others years nothing of note will be new.

As a towcar buyer, I don't find these awards helpful.
