Not being flippant now.

My main dislike with the auto, is lack of engine braking.

I understand now that some versions do employ this?

However the 2l primera i tested, left me feeling decidedly on edge, when i lift off the accelerator coming up to a turn off, i expect the car too reduce speed, with the auto the dam thing just carried on, so the brakes had to be used.

I finished the road test in manuel, and was more than happy to get out of the car, and back in control.

Perhaps happy auto owners can assure me that things have now moved on?

Engine Braking

As I said above for long downhill roads I do use the manual override to give more engine braking.

On everyday use I have not really ever considered it to be an issue. I think that there is a lot of "what I am used to" going on here. I know manual drivers who change down & use engine braking all the time & others who stay in top gear until they are going very slowly & then hit the clutch until they stop or are ready to move off again. These are very different views of engine braking. A friends son - about 10 years ago - was told not to use engine braking by changing gear because "brakes are cheaper than gearboxes / clutches when he took driving lessons.

All I can say is that when I move from manual to autos & back engine braking is never an issue.
