Where is the best area in the Dordogne and why?

Hi all

Looking to go to this area next year. Can you suggest best region and best sites to stay at.

Many thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

We have used several sites in this area but what suits a family may not be what you are looking for. If you give us a bit more info about what your needs are I am sure you will get more responses, it's a popular area particularly amongst the Brits.

This is purely a personal opinion, but having visited the Dordogne and the Ardeche regions, the Ardeche wins hands down for me. Very similar areas really, but the Ardeche is less 'spoilt', with less tourists (particularly Brits) and scenery just as good.

Personally we also prefer the cuisine of the Ardeche, but I suppose if you like Duck or Foie Gras, then the Dordogne is for you!

Like I say, just my opinion, not expecting everyone to agree!

I agree with Phil - and have noticed that the Ardeche area is less expensive (generally) both for site fees and for such things as eating out. There are exceptions, of course. As said, it's also quieter, more spectacular scenery, better canoeing, and within striking distance of the beach if you've children who like a beach holiday too.
