Firstly - it depends on how you installed the win10. If you 'opted' to keep your old files - that is upgraded from win8 to win10 then your photo's will still be there somewhere. if you did a 'fresh install' and removed the partition upon which win 8 was before then it becomes a lot more difficult to get your photos back. it can be done, there are people who specialise in recovering data from crashed disks etc. you can get software that enables you to recover data but it takes a lot of time. if you get someone else to do it t is expensive - because of the time. Google it - recovering data from reconfigured hard drives.
hths
btw It is amazing that most people never back up data like photo's on a hard drive even tho a hard drive only has an expected life of maybe 3 years.

and finally - the less you use the pc before attempting to recover the photos the better as the data will be overwritten in time and then it is gone forever.

This reply is of no real help, but my experience of Windows 8 & 10...I had an Acer laptop using Windows 8. managed to damage the keyboard, so I bought a new laptop, a Lenovo, which is windows 10. I bought a usb keyboard and got the damaged acer up and running, but relegated to my man-cave. I took advantage of the free upgrade to windows 10. For some reason, my Acer now showed a lenovo desktop screen. Different companies in different countries. weird. Anyway, i could not find drivers for my printer and scanner, so i reverted back to windows 8. I did get an Acer desktop screen back, but all the files I had were lost, or at least I couldn't find them. Nothing of any value lost. Hope your friend has better luck. Rick.
