May be Mel only drives in the dry😉

Many decades ago my Mother drove an Old Ford Prefect. The wipers would start off OK and the gradually slow down and stop. She somehow discovered that if you opened a door and slammed it shut hard they would go again. She regularly did this whilst still driving along with me and my brother as kids in the back ( not seat belted of course). This went on for months.
Possibly this is where I acquired my clearly woeful laissez faire attitude to windscreen wipers.

Always aware of safety so if needed would change them straight away so would continue to have good vision when driving.
I always wonder if cleaning your car in automatic car washers, that supply "shine stuff" to your bodywork and the windscreens, leaves a film of "stuff"

Yes it does, and hand car washes too. I tend to do my own cleaning, albeit not very often.

The latest "in" thing is supposed to be polishing the car with ceramic polish. I wonder if this ceramic coating actually work at keeping the car clean or is it another expensive rip off? We were offered it at time of purchase, but declined their kind offer as it would have cost about £900 to apply.

I was offered Gardx at £499, but you would get a better job and probably cheaper using a professional detailer.

My thoughts exactly as a dealer probably would not do a decent professional job taking into consideration the state of our car on collection.

Were you not too happy with the Lexus condition then? My ex SIL’s mother has had a Lexus IS200 since 2000 and it’s been brilliant. A full 25 year service history. For the first few years they even replaced her wheels when kerbed.

On day of collection we arrive at Lexus dealership and car is under a black car cover. Before they removed the cover they asked us if we would like to take pictures of them removing the cover. We both had a good chuckle and said no.

On removing the cover it looked like they had not even bothered to wash the car as marks all over the bonnet plus droppings of some kind. Considering that the car had been into the paint shop prior to purchase for stone chips to be removed it was a bit of a surprised. The salesman apologised profusely and we could see he was embarrassed.

Anyway they cleaned up the bonnet area and we took the car. Unfortunately a few other things have cropped up since, but none affect the running of the car and it is a brilliant comfortable drive. Lot more economical than the Jeep.

The costs can be a rip-off but the value of ceramic is very high - my 9-year old Touareg was ceramic-coated from new and still looks as good as new when cleaned - the coating also seems to protect in narrow lanes with brambles both sides. It cost £240 in 2015, including the necessary preparation.
