    Battery charging via ehu

There is little chance that the manufacturer will run a separate feed to the meter because it is a long run with panels often being by the door these days. The point I was making is that any load on the battery will drop the voltage, and especially if that feed is also the one that supplies the...

Bed Rams (read on you'll understand)

Great firm. Ordered some gas struts for wife's car, delivered and fitted in less than 24 hours.

    Compass Kensington electrics query

And before you switch on the electric water heater, make sure your water system is filled. Expensive mistake. I always remove the spur fuse from the control switch if not watered up to be sure. Once made a £120 error. Enjoy your caravanning, and if unsure, ask. We all want to pass on our...

    Battery charging via ehu

The voltmeters are quite often a long way (cable length) from the battery and any load on the battery when you test will cause voltage drop and affect the reading. A multimeter reading at the battery terminals would be a more accurate guide The van voltmeter should perhaps be considered as a...

    Replace truma heater

We find the Truma copes pretty well on electricity alone most of the time but in extremes of cold we use the gas supply instead, seldom together as Coachman advise against doing so. The occasional use of gas must be far cheaper than modifying the van, with the risk of valuation loss as...

    Motor Movers?

Before paying out good money, grab the connectors on the faulty side, wiggle them about and see if that solves it. Could be a dodgy connector. Easy repair to fit new connector.

MCB in van and EHU post tripping randomly

I too have a background in electrical engineering, but resolving problems from miles away is a doubtful expertise. .So, look at possibles. Could this be a truma electric water heater element? I have had one which failed and sure enough it tripped the van and the whole site. Ouch. But the...

USB sockets & LED interior lights

I fitted extra cigar/aux sockets as they can be used whether on grid or not. Even my TV is always run from 12v socket even when on grid. Tidier wiring setup and fewer bits to carry.

    Calor Lite 6kg?

I always thought Calor overcharged for their 6Kg bottles and went over to BP/Flogas. Since Homebase was bought out, their price for these is very competitive. Last one I got was £28 for 10Kg. Come on CMC/CCC move forward and see what's available.

    Who knows about generators?

I like Gafferbill's option. My ix35 has a massive alterator up front, driven by 2000cc and already in my weight allocation. I also carry an inverter so plus/plus/plus. Another bit of cable is trivial. Hyundai do shut down accessories after 15 minutes or so but you can connect again if you...

    Alko Wheel lock

And when you need a levelling device it gets worse. My solution is a length of 4 X 2 chamferred at one end. Wheel overall dia x 3.14 divided by number of wheel spokes, plus a bit for a margin gives effective length needed. Add another wood strip on top if needed, but why go for absolute...

No spark in cooker, water heater or heater

Early Truma heaters had a small battery box containing AA batteries under the front face at left hand corner. Worth a look.

    Powrtouch mover

The spade connectors on the motors can get dirty as they are near all of the muck. Wriggle them about and see if this clears the problem. If so fit the cables with new crimped spade connectors.

    Caravan Levelling

I have an AL-KO wheel lock and lining this up co-incidentally with a level caravan by using ramps was, I found, messy. Level would be OK but Al-KO not aligned, or vice versa. For some years now I just used a length of 4" x 2" timber and pull the van up onto it. The ideal length can be...

    Maximum gas bottle size

Many caravans will have the gas bottle base fixing former suitable for calor 6 and 7 Kg bottles and also the Gaslite (ex BP) 5 and 10 Kg bottles. I use the latter as it is much cheaper, especially since Homebase was bought out. (Refillable not for me thanks)
