If you're overtaking you shouldn't be waving at anyone but concentrating on driving.
Having said that, I doubt whether, in principle, a 4x4 should be any more reliable than a non-4x4, or vice versa. I hazard a guess that the make says more about the car's reliability than what type of car it is. Nevertheless, whichever side of the fence you're sitting on, you'll always be able to find an example to prove your own point.
