We have a Miele heat pump tumble drier and it probably has to be the most useless item we have purchased. It has been running since about 9.00am and it is now 10.49am and the washing in it is still damp. Granted it does not use much electric, but what is the point if it doesn't dry the laundry?

Our previous normal tumble drier which we gave to our daughter when they came over would have dried the laundry long ago. IMHO heat pumps have to be the biggest con on mankind! Seriously thinking of swapping machines back again, but doubt if they would want to swap.

Our 25 year old Zanussi auto reverse tumble drier drys everything from between 60/90 minutes depending on the load and material type. It vents to the exterior and doesn’t use a significant amount of power.
I wonder how easy it is to repair your Miele?

We were considering a heat pump tumble dryer when we refurbish the kitchen next year, we currently have a Bosch condenser dryer which is use very other day for the past 8 years, thanks for the heads up.

We use a dehumidifier in the bathroom, very effective and economical plus I get a good supply of demin water for my screen washers. Tumble drier in garage only goes on for a few items such as towels when either they won't dry on the line, or bathroom clothes horse is full. And then my wife tries to time it when we have reduced rate electric.

The tumble drier is not faulty, it just doesn't dry like the vented tumble drier. We have had the manufacturer out to check the machine and there is no issue with it according to them. The issue here is that with the old tumble drier, you knew the clothes would be dry 90 minutes later and you could plan your day around that time. With the heat pump after 90 minutes the items are still feeling damp so the machine needs to run longer. This is supposed to be a top rated machine!

We used to have a Miele heat pump dryer. Same experience as Buckman’s. Took ages and filled the kitchen with condensation in spite of keeping the filters clean etc. Got rid in the end and now have a very basic indesit. Massively better.

Our old condensing dryer is in the garage, wouldn't let one in the house 😲
Try not to use it as it takes electric, dry on the line, another line in the veranda or a clothes horse in the greenhouse/potting shed.

A bit of Fred Drift.

Our 30 month old top combined Bosch Oven and microwave ignited last September filling the kitchen with a thick acrid smoke.

An engineer from the extended warranty company attended twice. He fitted a new transformer, a new magnetron. Still no good. He ordered a new pcb . After waiting two weeks we found out he’d gone on holiday for six weeks.

Another engineer was appointed. Another two week wait. The guy phoned us on the morning of his scheduled visit. He wouldn’t attend as he is not microwave trained!

After an hour on the phone to a call centre in the Philippines I was told another engineer would attend. By now we discovered the real problem was the microwave guide plate which had melted. Told them this but they said the engineer has to order the parts and it must be the pcb.
We costed the parts so far and the engineers call and already the cost was over £500!

Finally got hold of someone with brains in the NE near Darlington. She sorted it out and agreed it was a waste of money trying to fix it. We now have a new unit.

BUT, our oem was released by Bosch in February 2023. A flat bed microwave combined top oven.
They no longer make them! All that is available are conventional models with turntables.
Clearly Bosch must have experienced a number of issues with this model. I’m surprised they didn’t do a Product Recall. Clearly the design was /is fundamentally flawed.

Our new Bosch matches the lower main oven and works perfectly👍

Looking at Bosch web site there are only heat pump models . No old fashioned ones? Is this correct?
Which have just issued the report on 2025 tumble dryers. The testing is very comprehensive and should give a good idea of the overall effectiveness. Looking at Bosch website it seems as if all are heat pump as all seem to be designed for use within the home. Not sure where I’d put a heat pump one as presumably installing in a garage wouldn’t be that good an option.

I think Buckmans might have been an early design, although Meile are a reputable company so no idea why his is deemed unsatisfactory. Reading Piston Heads website on a tumble dryer thread those with heat pump units seem well satisfied although it does seem they take longer than an electric heated type, but use much less electricity doing so.

Our tumble dryer is less than 3 years old. It does use less electric, but the issue is, like ALL heat pumps it seems to take forever to dry clothes. It is a common complaint about heat pump dryers and is mentioned in the reviews by the Telegraph and elsewhere. Definitely not a time saver machine!

This is very much as I find with the dehumidifier in its "Laundry" mode, but then time is not generally an issue with my use. The occassions I do need to get things dry quickly I use our very old Bosch condensing tumbler drier.
Like, Clive I use the condensate from both for making up our screen washer fluid.
Drying outside is the preferred option whenever that's a practical one.
