Recommendations please - near a beach in August?

I'm just starting to think about where we're going to go for a week or two in August and would appreciate any recommendations.

We'd like a nice site, preferably near the beach. It needs to have electric hook up and toilet block.

We have a two year old and 12 year old.

Any suggestions any where in the UK would be appreciated as I'm not sure where to start!

Thanks,

Becky

You could end up with a `scattergun` reply, Becky.

Where are you coming from and how far do you want to travel (time or distance)?.

It will just help to narrow things down a bit.

Hiya,

Thats a good point! We live in Essex, just off the M25 / near Stansted. We've agreed that our main point is in the UK, even if we stop off some where on the way there over night.

We've only had a caravan a year, last year we had a few problems so only went away a few times. This year we'd like to explore more, but to be honest have a very limited knowledge of where to vist Uk so any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Becky

If you don't mind the distance, Rosemarkie C&CC site, near Inverness. Another is Brora, even further north. Both within stone throws of sandy beaches.

Pentewan Sands in Cornwall. By far the best I've been to is Carradale Bay, Kintyre peninsular, where we went last summer, but it's a long haul. It was June and the sea was tepid. Sandy beach a mile long with hardly anyone on it. We were lucky though, the 10 days we spent there never went below 24c in the daytime.

Carradale Bay below. The caravans are in the background on the first pic.

I agree with Lord B that if you can do the distance, its difficult to beat Scotland, similarly there are sites in Cornwall that meet the criteria, but will be VERY busy in August.

Try having a look at Wales, which can be as nice as Cornwall but not as commercialised.

The CC sites at Freshwater East (just across the (very quiet)road from an excellent clean beach and dunes) or Pembrey Country Park (walk to the beach, loads for kids to do in the country park without needing the car).

These two are about 250-300 miles for you (nearly all motorway) so should be achievable in a day.

Hiya,

Thanks to both of your for your suggestions, we decided that the best option distance wise was Wales, as Scotland seemed a bit too far for our first long distrance trip, although the site does look gorgous.

So, we went to the book the wales one and they are already fully booked for August weekends!!

Any other suggestions? Please.

Becky

First off, Becky, were both of the welsh sites fully booked?

Don`t trust the website, if you are a member either ring the site if open, or CC bookings as very often there are spaces when the websites say they are full.

Another site we`ve used in the past is in Llanon (south of Aberystwyth) called Woodlands. A lot smaller, it has hook-ups and a small but clean toilet block. Its a 200 yard walk from the site down a small lane to a pebbly beach (spent hours there in the rock pools with my daughter when she was little), we even had our honeymoon there 27 years ago (and then went back ever year despite it being 200 miles away!)

Its been run by Ian Lampert for about 35 years (his mum & dad before that) but is friendly cheap and clean, with a small shop on site. its near to New Quay (quaint, nice beaches), Aberaron (shops, take-aways, lovely harbour with honey ice-cream) and Aberystwyth (Shops, beaches, shops etc.)

Depends if you want an all singing-and-dancing site or a family site really.

Alternatively, how about North Devon?

Hi Rebecca

I Know its not Wales but look at Searles at Hunstanton close to beach and all facilities you could want and not to far away

Hope this helps
