Hi david, little do you know you have potentially unleashed a debate about the 85% rule/guideline/advice/myth. See recent threads on this topic. Before anyone else piles in, I, who knows nothing, will say that the car to van weight ratio is only one factor in towing stability. Correct loading, noseweight, tyre pressures and driving style all contribute to whether a unit "behaves" on the road. Pay attention to all these things and you should be OK.

Hi David,

Mel is in my view absolutely right. weight ratio is only one factor, and by no way necessarily the biggest factor.

Just aim to keep the caravan as light as possible.

Mel You are the one that mentioned the taboo ratio figure, David only reported his figure.

I was pleased to see the latest Whatcar mag towcar test, refer to the 85% RULE.

Well done what car!

Referring to the recommendation as a rule is downright irresponsible as it could lead one into a state of false security based on the assumption that everything below the limit is safe and everything above unsafe.
