We have the same system in the Lexus and handbrake comes on automatically when moving it into park. This goes against everything I was taught on my advanced course many years ago.

We were always taught, foot brake to hold car, hand brake applied and then select neutral or park. That way you had complete control over the car.

Having said that, I do like the "Hold" facility which is similar to the electronic hand brake and that activates every time you stop when in Drive. On your Rav when selecting gears, is there an "S" option for superfast? LOL!
I’m sure I have to have foot brake on to put the car into Park. Going out soon so will pay attention to my actions 😂

Yes it has a Sport mode, plus Eco snd Nirmal and an EV one too. It also has manual mode which I use for landing in Bath with its super inclined hills. 99% of the time it’s in Normal mode as that suits me.

In the olden days, we were all taught using the mechanical features then available.

Although I didn't like it to start with, I've got used to the Autohold and automatic parking brake but old habits mean that I still apply the "handbrake" switch when parking even though the system has already done it.

Our Jeep had the footbrake and I prefer it over the electronic hand brake.
I had the same on both 2010 and 2013 Mercedes C-Class estates. Both cars were 6-speed manuals. Trying juggling four pedals when trying to do a quick hill start!

Hyundai fitted a foot-operated parking brake on the automatic version of the Santa Fe but had the good sense to fit a conventional handbrake lever on the manual version.

This a push brake is near the steering wheel and to tell you the truth I prefer this but when you use it seems like footbrake goes down at the same time . Also my new car has had adaptions fitted (Hand controls )

Apologies I should have clarified. On the Jeep instead of a hand brake, you have a foot operated "hand" brake. On occasions I still feel for ti when stopping in the Lexus even though the car has the "hold" function. Not sure if the RAV has the "hold", but I would think so as we have it on the Yaris. BTW we get over 68mpg with the Yaris. Lexus returns about 38mpg. Between both a big saving on the Jeep and old Corolla. Filled up the Yaris from being less than half full and was lucky to be able to squeeze in 20 litres. It has a range of approximately 500 miles on a tank.

Yes RAV 4 has Autohold which I use regularly. Surprised at the 38 mpg on your Lexus as apart from a short hop which is rare 56mpg is my lowest in 4 weeks, and it’s normally above that on a mix of A and B roads plus local towns. Last Wednesday we went to Bath and it averaged 65.9 mpg on the return trip. Not dissimilar on the outbound one too.

I can get fantastic MPG out of the SantaFe crusing at 70 mph, but one mile of crawling along at 10 mph, knocks it all back down to 30 MPG.

I think your RAV is a lot newer than our 2021 Lexus NX300 although both have the 2.5 ltr engine? I think the newer NX350 get the sort of mpg you mention. Apparently the NX450 is even better by a good margin.

Mines a Generation 5 introduced in 2019, so yours must be the Lexus introduced in 2014 and replaced 2021. That would explain some of the difference in mpg. Between RAV4 Generation 4 and 5 apart from improving the efficiency of the powertrain the structural strength improved over 50%, a big plus to primary safety, and better handling.

Conventionally the "Hand" brake is frequently called the parking brake, and technically the automatic "AutoHold" is not a parking brake but as the name suggests it simply hold the vehicle when its stationary, and should only be considered to be a temporary holding device similar to the foot brakes.

In my Passat, the auto hold also turns the brake lights on, which I personally detest, having sat behind a similar car in a ques and been dazzled by the brake lights.

Either way I'm finding it impossible to do "parking brake" turns in modern cars with electric brakes.

Mine drops from Autohold after a defined time interval and the parking brake comes on. Not checked if the PB illuminates the rear brake lights with the engine running. Must do so.

I use the auto hold when travelling through town and ir works well. When selecting "park" the handbrake automatically engages so no need to even touch it.

I seriously doubt if the Rear brake lights will be activated by the Parking Brake with or without the engine running. However auto hold might.

With all this Save the planet stuff, probably unlikely, but it is a good point. I have never bothered to check on either of our cars.

I know Autohold keeps the brake lights on, but never checked the electrical parking brake. But when Autohold drops out after a pre set time the PB comes on and the engine is running. So I will check.

This Autohold do you leave on all time or when you need it, like going through towns . like next month going on the M62 would it better off ?

Are you expecting a lot of stationary traffic on the M62?

I leave mine on all the time - and just learnt how it marginally affects moving off from stationary
Hi Roger that the answer I was looking for was not sure thanks for your help in this matter🙏

Just remember to turn it on when starting or you could get a surprise as you first come to a stop where’s there is a slope. Assuming your car doesn’t default to Autohold.

My Touareg stays in whatever setting was operative when the engine last switched off - I'd soon get ratty with any car that needed selections making each time you drove off!

Many modern cars now require you to make changes to safety features each time you switch on. You can turn them off before driving away, but once you switch on again the default is to enable the safety features. On my daughter's car they have to be switched off individually, but my son's Duster allows you to switch some off as a group, but others cannot be switched off at all.

I don't know if other brands have the equivalent of Ross-tech's VCDS for VW Group vehicles but I'd want to use it to configure the defaults as last setting - not that I have any plans to get a more modern car.

Don't buy an Audi then..... Not all, admittedly, but some functions revert back to "wrap the driver in cotton wool" mode whenever you re-start it.
