We have the same system in the Lexus and handbrake comes on automatically when moving it into park. This goes against everything I was taught on my advanced course many years ago.

We were always taught, foot brake to hold car, hand brake applied and then select neutral or park. That way you had complete control over the car.

Having said that, I do like the "Hold" facility which is similar to the electronic hand brake and that activates every time you stop when in Drive. On your Rav when selecting gears, is there an "S" option for superfast? LOL!

Yes it has a Sport mode, plus Eco snd Nirmal and an EV one too. It also has manual mode which I use for landing in Bath with its super inclined hills. 99% of the time it’s in Normal mode as that suits me.

In the olden days, we were all taught using the mechanical features then available.

Although I didn't like it to start with, I've got used to the Autohold and automatic parking brake but old habits mean that I still apply the "handbrake" switch when parking even though the system has already done it.

I had the same on both 2010 and 2013 Mercedes C-Class estates. Both cars were 6-speed manuals. Trying juggling four pedals when trying to do a quick hill start!

Hyundai fitted a foot-operated parking brake on the automatic version of the Santa Fe but had the good sense to fit a conventional handbrake lever on the manual version.

This a push brake is near the steering wheel and to tell you the truth I prefer this but when you use it seems like footbrake goes down at the same time . Also my new car has had adaptions fitted (Hand controls )

On occasions I still feel for ti when stopping in the Lexus even though the car has the "hold" function. Not sure if the RAV has the "hold", but I would think so as we have it on the Yaris. BTW we get over 68mpg with the Yaris. Lexus returns about 38mpg. Between both a big saving on the Jeep and old Corolla. Filled up the Yaris from being less than half full and was lucky to be able to squeeze in 20 litres. It has a range of approximately 500 miles on a tank.

Similar to ours I had my new car in eco mode when we went to Cambridge and it average 65 mpg and so far we are very happy with it .🙏

I can get fantastic MPG out of the SantaFe crusing at 70 mph, but one mile of crawling along at 10 mph, knocks it all back down to 30 MPG.

I think your RAV is a lot newer than our 2021 Lexus NX300 although both have the 2.5 ltr engine? I think the newer NX350 get the sort of mpg you mention. Apparently the NX450 is even better by a good margin.

Mines a Generation 5 introduced in 2019, so yours must be the Lexus introduced in 2014 and replaced 2021. That would explain some of the difference in mpg. Between RAV4 Generation 4 and 5 apart from improving the efficiency of the powertrain the structural strength improved over 50%, a big plus to primary safety, and better handling.

Conventionally the "Hand" brake is frequently called the parking brake, and technically the automatic "AutoHold" is not a parking brake but as the name suggests it simply hold the vehicle when its stationary, and should only be considered to be a temporary holding device similar to the foot brakes.

In my Passat, the auto hold also turns the brake lights on, which I personally detest, having sat behind a similar car in a ques and been dazzled by the brake lights.

Either way I'm finding it impossible to do "parking brake" turns in modern cars with electric brakes.

Mine drops from Autohold after a defined time interval and the parking brake comes on. Not checked if the PB illuminates the rear brake lights with the engine running. Must do so.
