In the early eighties my ex-wife's mother baked a Christmas cake. No idea what she put into it, but you could not cut it it was that hard. You had to sue a hammer to break chips off it. As far as I am aware she never baked another cake!

Back in the 70s it was usual to stuff the entire body cavity of the Turkey; not just the neck ( at least it was in S Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿). My grandmother used to do this, then half cook the Turkey on Christmas Eve and then cook it off again on Christmas Day. It’s a wonder she didn’t kill the lot of us with food poisoning. 😀

Been out today hosting BIL from his care home and taking him out for nice lunch. By the time 25th arrives I will be “fooded “ up to the gills, and probably just pick at the pub’s Xmas lunch. Never mind only another 7 days or so and the days start lengthening 👍

The evenings are getting lighter already - but the mornings won't start getting lighter until around 29th December - hence the shortest day about the 21st.

Quite possibly that like us you were born before the "sanitiser generation" so were able to develop a bit of valued immunity?

The locations throughout the world I have found myself, it has generally stood me in good stead, one nasty exception apart.

Sorry if I have made an incorrect assumption, no intent to offend.

Oh yes My mother would put the Turkey in the oven at 9 pm, on gas mark 1/4 ready for 3 pm next day. Cabbage puree only took 3 hours .
Turkey stuffed with oatmeal, onions and bacon.

Interesting.
My mum was a Stepford wife too. She did everything.
For the uninitiated 1/4 on the gas oven is 104 degs C. Any bugs will be well eradicated over the oven stay.
We never had a bad Christmas dinner. She turned the oven up for the roasts.

In those days we are talking about one mother of a Turkey. 20 lbs was the norm for a complete bird.

Our is all up in the air as the pub contacted my wife last night to say they cannot get staff for Christmas Day so will have to cancel the bookings. Staffing issues affected us last February in Lynton and Lynmouth where hospitality venues had agreed an opening rota and on closed days staff moved to an open venue. This was a voluntary scheme aimed at helping the venues get through to spring when seasonal workers would hopefully come to the area and take up the vacancies.

Looks like it might be Charlie Bighams best for 25th. 😂

I think our son in South Africa will be have ice cold meat and ice cream for Christmas lunch. This was the temperature yesterday! View attachment 8007
Just had an email from friends in Sydney, they have touched 40 deg C in their spring. At those temperatures unless you have aircon it’s pretty miserable. Perhaps your son could rig up a couple of computer fans to the fridge freezer 😂

Sorry to read this, and realise that it could be a more widespread issue.

Sorry in that a proper shared Christmas Dinner is way more than just a meal, it can be a whole social experience with friends old and new.

Hope something rewarding crops up to make it a memorable experience for all the right reasons.

Thanks. What with the shortage of hospitality staff, carers, lorry drivers, nurses and construction workers etc I wonder where it all went awry.

I'm pleased to say that we have been found an alternative venue for Christmas Lunch in another Butcombe country hotel about 6 miles from us, same menu being offered too. Next year the dog will be kennelled and we will go to Wales to see our son. Providing Christmas Lunch every year since 1976 and guest services from 24-26th, apart from 4--5 pub versions, it would be nice to be hosted.

Gurt big fry up in the morning, fore-rib of beef for dinner. No turkey here .
I went out yesterday and bought a leg of lamb, 2.8 kg , £43.68, just enough for 4 of us,
Another question, do you have Yorkshire pudding with your Christmas Feast. ?

Just seen Lidl, has West country legs of lamb for sale at £9.95 a kg.
Have one of those for the freezer.

Earlier in the year when the price of a leg of lam dropped we bought two legs of lamb. Unfortunately as just the two of us not had the opportunity to roast the legs.

We generally have two legs of lamb in our daughter’s freezer. As one is used for a family Sunday roast another one will be purchased………if the price is right. 🐑
