Thanks Alan........that was my first thought :)

Decided against it as I try to keep the Old Nissan in good order and I would not want my repair to break way down in Spain!
To that end I am prepared to buy new if needed.......its only money

Update...........Fixed it :)

Managed to get a replacement stalk switch unit from our local very large car breakers.

The part was from a Nissan Primera and from the outside looked identical to my old part.
They charged me £6 and it was off the shelf.......I was dubious the internals would be the same and I was right to be as the contact sliders were different.
Juggled the bits around to make one good working unit........result :)

You's a clever boy..well done :) :)

I'd almost forgotten this picture which I snapped on my phone when we had a walk round Banbury town centre.
It looks very much like a piece of art by Banksy and it was just inside the entrance to an entry close to a public house.
I should imagine that it's a very good copy of the original.

Dont want to upset you Gaffer, but you should have put a bottle of it away, might have been worth a fortune in a few years time, The Woosie Brewery has gone into Liquidation :(
Am currently seeking a new investor and have had many takers.......until they sober up the next day

Thanks for the recommendation though, much appreciated :)

Just picked up the new tow car, see signature box. :)

It's got an electric hand brake, so something strange to get used to now. Will try to put about 1,000 miles on the clock before towing the van again.

Has the towbar been fitted?

Yes, fitted in the factory during assembly. It is retractable and has both the 13 pin connector and eyelet for breakaway cable built in to the swan neck. However can't seem to get a short enough clip-on cable to make use of the eyelet. Need one about 0.8 m (to fit the 0.7 m absolute measurement) and the standard ones are 1 m which would drag on the ground in the middle.

For the sake of a few quid buy both and make one to suit your needs. ...... or search just for the cable clamp and use your old one .....
Either way make sure that you remove the plastic coating on the wire so that the clamp can grip the cable securely.

Yes, it looks like I need to do a DIY cable.

Edit - Found this one, so ordered it. :)

............there is advice out there that says that only break away cables manufactured by the trailer chassis maker should be bought as replacements.

The argument given is that these cables have to be manufactured to be just strong enough to apply the trailers handbrake and then to immediately break so as to allow the car and caravan to separate cleanly.
I have always accepted this advice since the costs of only using the chassis makers original part is not prohibitive.

It's a catch 22 situation - the rules are that the cable must take a direct straight route such that there's no snags when the cable is pulled tight during a break away event. The direct route is much shorter than the standard 1m cables and hence the cable would drag on the ground in the middle and wear away. Three options:

1. Obtain a shorter cable, but from where?
2. Use the clip on eye and wrap the excess cable around the draw bar (but defeats the requirement of the direct line)
3. Ignore the clip on eye and go for the back up option of wrapping the cable around the ball.

Why isn't life easy?
