With the plunge in the value of the pound against the euro, I'm cosidering buying some camping cheques for next year. The Camping Cheque website has them at £11.95 each, and the CC has them at £10.30. Can anyone comment on their use - particularly as we prefer quiet CL-type sites - and whether or not it is worth buying a Gold Card? Is it better to buy them as a ferry/cheque package? Any info gratefully received, even if it's not to a specific question. Thanks in advance.

Most of the sites in the Camping Cheque network of around 550 sites are NOT the CL type - they tend to be larger sites, with pools, take-aways, restaurants, etc. However, they are almost unfailingly of high quality, and in low season can be just as quiet (on the pitches) as a smaller site. In May 2007 we were the only occupied pitch of ten on our section of the site. Touring Cheques, too, offer similar discounts, and similar sites (overlapping in some cases). At Bastide en Ardeche in May this year only around 10 of the 200 odd pitches were occupied. Take a look at the Camping Cheque and Touring Cheque websites (www.campingcheque.co.uk, www.touringcheque.co.uk) to see the sort of sites on offer.

We've been using them for twelve years, and never found a bad site - some we prefer more than others, and some we wouldn't go back to, but not for any particular reason. We've used Camping Cheque sites to 'overnight' as well as for longer-stays, and have never had problems finding pitches. We holiday twice a year - in late May/early June, and at the end of August/early September. I've seen comments that towards later June some sites do become full - so the Gold Card offers an advantage in that you can 'book' a pitch without pre-payment! If you're a member of the Caravan Club then usually the package of cheques and ferry is cheaper than the two elements separately (but not always, so check costings before booking). This year we booked our ferry, for car and caravan, through the Caravan Club (using Norfolk Lines for the crossing) and the crossing element cost us just
