Thank you all all that contributed to the post. Some really helpful information, certainly learnt a great deal, got my out of trouble for nearly buying a q5 and hopefully made the right decisions car wise to keep me on the right weight and with a good tow ratio.

Van is now in Edinburgh for the fringe. Towed by a friend of mine in his Civic 2.2cdti. Car did a great job, only loaded the car and not the van, bags and bags or tourqe, felt some movement when passing lorries but nothing major.

The empty caravan will be more susceptible to movement as it does not have the weight inside to resist sidewinds so if towed with more in with a heavier tow car you should notice the improvement.
The only possible problem I see with loading the car with everything could be you overload the car or just the back axle, so this needs watching unless you travel very light.
