I share your interest Bill. The caravan park was once occupied by the airfield technical site, and the old airfield is still used by a gliding club.
RAF Strubby started off as a RAF Coastal Command station before 619 sqdn moved in with Lancasters.
There's a memorial to 619 sqdn, who in the final days of World War 2 bombed Hitlers mountain retreat in the Bavarian Alps.
RAF Coningsby, home to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, is around 30 miles from the caravan park.
Hangar tours are available to see the historic aircraft up close, the hangar is well worth the trip.
The East Lindsey Aviation Heritage Trail takes in RAF Strubby. I used to have a look around some of the old Bomber stations in Lincolnshire years ago when I was a lorry driver. I often took slight detours to have my lunchtime sandwiches close to old control towers or hutted flight offices, many of which have been demolished since.[/quote]
Cheers Parksy,
I might just go down earlier or extend my stay, never been in that part of the world or had any connection to wartime aircraft, but sounds very interesting, I am more and more looking forward to the outing.
Any other tips for the area would be so nice to hear about.
